Announcements November 19th

1) Students in designated classes in Grade 7 and Grade 8 will be given a survey package to bring home to parents. The package is an invitation for parents to participate in PCASH, a study of Parents' Communication with their Adolescents about Sexual Health. This study is being conducted by Dr. Heather Sears and Dr. Sandra Byers of the Psychology Department at the University of New Brunswick. The purpose of the research is to understand factors that influence parents' decisions about when to have sexual health discussions with their adolescents. The researchers would like parents who have had these conversations with their adolescents and parents who have not had these conversations to respond by completing and returning a survey booklet by mail. A complete description of the project is included in the survey package, including how to contact Dr. Sears or Dr. Byers if you have any questions.

Messages for Novemmber 9th

1) Reminder no school for students – Wednesday November 11th for Remembrance Day. Also, no school Thursday and Friday November 12th and 13th.

2) Parent – Teacher Interviews are Thursday evening from 6 to 8:30 pm and Friday morning from 8:30 to 11:30 am. Thank you to our school community for the great response we receive every year for appointments to meet our teachers during our scheduled Parent Teacher interview times. Because each group of teachers can only accommodate a finite set of parents, you may have not been able to meet with the teachers during the scheduled P-T night and morning. We want to let you know that our teams are always ready to meet with parents at other alternative times. Simply let your child’s homeroom teacher know that you would like to meet with them. Thank you for your support ! -

3) Yearbooks will be on sale throughout the next 2 weeks.
In grade 6 students should see Mrs. Hubert; grade 7 students to Mlle Levesque and grade 8 students to Mme Manderson.
The cost is $25.00 and checks should be made out to George Street Middle School.
Sales end on November 20th.

4) Are you planning on purchasing a poinsettia? If yes, could you please do so through our school? Green Village will donate a certain amount back to our school for every poinsettia purchased. Please review the information on the attachment to this message.

5) I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers of our Home and School for a successful November Nonsense. Having such dedicated parents is what makes GSMS a great place for our kids!

Messages for November 2-6, 2009

Announcements November 2nd – 6th, 2009

1) Tomorrow – Monday November 2nd, 2009 will be our H1N1 flu shot clinic. The clinic is only for GSMS students who have their permission forms signed. Some parents have asked if they can be present during their child’s vaccination. Two reasons this cannot happen. First, we cannot with certainty tell you at what time your child will be vaccinated. Second, Monday November 2nd is still a regular school day and we need to ensure all our students safety and cannot allow unescorted adults within the building. Rest assured, there will be plenty of supports for our kids during the day. Your child can still get the shot at any other public clinic. Thank you for understanding and your co-operation.
2) Also, Monday November 2nd is our monthly Parent School Support Committee meeting at 6:30 pm in the library.
3) And – Also on Monday November 2nd your child will be bringing home their interim report card. Parents/Guardians are asked to sign and send back the report to their child’s homeroom teacher.
4) November Nonsense is Friday November 6th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm --- please stop by an have a great time in our annual carnival atmosphere fun time event!
5) On Tuesday November 10th at 10 am in the school’s gymnasium is scheduled our Remembrance Day ceremony. All friends and family of our community are invited to attend. If you are currently serving in the military ( or a veteran) and would like to speak at our ceremony, please contact me at 453-5419 or via email Pierre.plourde@nbed.nb.ca

Memo for week September 28th-Oct 2nd, 2009

Messages for the week Sept. 28th – October 2nd

- George Street Middle School’s Home and School Association will be holding their first meeting on Wednesday Evening from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the school’s boardroom.

In the past the H&S has raised money that has funded a number of initiatives in the school. Some examples are: FM sound systems in a number of classrooms that amplifies the teacher’s voice, our welcome display screen, 10 laptops for the library which has greatly improved our computer lab and many other projects.

Along with providing the school with many extras that have helped improve student learning, the monthly H&S meetings provide parents with an opportunity to speak directly with one of the school’s vice-principals about the goings on at the school. Many parents have noted that this regular contact makes them feel more connected to the school community.

- Thursday October 1st is the start of D 18’s SAFE SCHOOLS week. As part of that initiative we plan to have fire drills, bus and school evacuation exercises, and lockdown practices. Further, we want to alert our school community Threat Assessment policy found on page 15 in the Student Agenda . We ask parents to read, sign and have their child hand it to the homeroom teacher.

- On Friday Oct 2nd, a new edition of our monthly newsletter – Meet Us In The Middle- will be posted on our website http://georgest.nbed.nb.ca . Our newsletter is loaded with samples of student work and information about the school.

- We did postponed our Terry Fox walk last Friday but we plan to reschedule it for this upcoming Friday. We ask each child to bring $1.00 to participate in the walk.

Have a great week!

Staff and Students are asked to wear pink!!!

You can get more information at http://www.dayofpink.org/

Creative Clothing

George Street Middle School Student Representative Council will be having a School Clothing sale such as t-shirts/hooded sweatshirts, etc. The School Logo for all students and the 2009 signatures for the grade 8s will also be available for the shirts.

This year, “CreativeClothing” will be doing the job for us. They will send their representatives and their mobile store to our school. On-site printing and sizing means there is no risk to the school of running out of, or having unsold products left over after the event. Also, this eliminates the possibility of having ordered the wrong sizes. Both students and staff are very pleased with this approach. In handling the project in this manner, our students and staff will be able to purchase the clothing that is desired, have it printed, and take it home that very day.

You are invited to drop by and check out this mobile unit for high quality clothing products at competitive prices.

T-shirts Juniors $18.00 Adults $20.00
Long sleeves Juniors $22.00 Adults $24.00
Hooded Sweatshirts Juniors $35.00 Adults $40.00
PLUS
